Importance of Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Heart, Brain, and Nervous System Health
A little prick of blood on a dry spot (known as the Omega 3 index plus test) tells you as much about your heart attack risk as a Hemoglobin A1C will tell you about your risk of Diabetes. That’s pretty nifty! Omega 3 concentration is critical-not only to our heart, but to our eyes, brain and nervous system.
Get this- In every case of depression, Omega 3 levels are low. Inmates with lower omega-3 index are more aggressive and have higher ADD scores. Hostility and aggression in prisoners go down when more Omega 3’s are added to their diet.
The most studied Omega 3’s are EPA/ DHA. Our body selectively chooses to allow DHA to cross the blood-brain barrier and provide “ready-to-use” fatty acids for our brain. Low levels of DHA are a risk factor in cognitive impairment such as depression, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. Research now links the level of DHA to our “feel good” neurotransmitter of Serotonin. In short, the more DHA we have, the more serotonin and the greater chances for a feel-good great mood!
Pregnancy Brain Alert!
For pregnant women, foggy thinking and feeling low may be symptoms of low levels of DHA. If pregnant women don’t have enough DHA in their diet, their baby can actually ‘steal’ it from the mother’s brain. It is really important for pregnant women to boost their DHA levels, particularly in the third trimester and in the first four months of life when the baby’s brain is growing at a phenomenal rate. Baby’s developing brain needs DHA, the same way as growing bones need calcium. The greatest risk for neonatal deaths is linked with Omega 3 status. Premature babies are lacking in DHA, eye, and brain development because they get most DHA from Mom in the third trimester.

Omega 3’s Potential Benefits and Call to Action
Some of the compounds that EPA and DHA help to produce are known as resolvins and protectins, which have antibacterial and antiviral properties. This could potentially be a way to help our mood and offer immune protection-critical these days wouldn’t you say?
Call to action: With the exception of the state of Alaska, the rest of the USA is considered very deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids. Rather than guess, find out for sure! Order your Omega 3 Index Plus test through Standard Process at a reduced price.
The Standard Process Difference
Understanding the differences between our premium whole triglyceride fish oils and so much of what’s out there is important. Our fish is cleaned at a very low temperature without affecting the natural triglyceride balance. We have several high-quality fish oils to choose from.
